Massachusetts Football Defeated By #6/5 Penn State

Tyler Rudolph came up with his first career fumble recovery.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Massachusetts football team was defeated by fifth-ranked Penn State, 63-0, Saturday afternoon at Beaver Stadium (105,533). 

Nahji Logan led the way with eight tackles, including six solo, followed by JB Brown and Isaiah Rutherford with six total tackles apiece. 

Additionally, Brown recorded a sack, while Rutherford was credited with a forced fumble. Tyler Rudolph also registered his first career fumble recovery on the afternoon.  

Massachusetts stopped Penn State's first drive of the game when Rutherford forced a fumble that was picked up by Rudolph. 

The Nittany Lions got on the board with a 56-yard punt return touchdown and then added to its lead with a one-yard quarterback keeper up the middle on a first-and-goal.  

Penn State scored two more TDs in the second quarter to end the first half with a 28-0 lead.  

The Nittany Lions registered five more TDs to come away with the win. 

Notes 

  • Billy Wooden and Josh Atwood served as the Massachusetts captains for the eighth consecutive game, while quarterback Taisun Phommachanh was a captain for the second game in a row and that trio was joined by Tyler Rudolph

  • Rudolph came up with his first career fumble recovery early in the first quarter, which was Penn State's first offensive turnover of the season. 

  • Isaiah Rutherford was credited with his second career forced fumble on the play (first at UMass).

Massachusetts enters its bye week, before returning to action on Saturday, October 27, when the Minutemen face Army in West Point, N.Y., at 12 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
