Wrapping it Up: Defense Downs Offense 20-3 in 2022 Spring Game

AMHERST, Mass. -Ā The Massachusetts Minutemen completed their final spring practice as the defense defeated the offense 20-3. Ā Alumni and friends were able to return to Amherst for the first true spring event since 2019.

Fans saw prominent Alumni on campus in Isaiah Rodgers and Brandon London, who appeared on the Spring Game show.

"It was a different format, one that I'm not familiar with, but a lot of time went into it.' said head coach, Don Brown. "I can tell you this, we're not ready, yet. We are moving in the right direction. The most important date, on our timeline, is Friday night in New Orleans."
While the defense took the victory, Brown saw some shining moments on offense in the run game.

"There weren't a lot of explosive plays down the field for the defense, but on the other side of that coin, I think there were a lot of good moments for the offense. If we can't run the ball, and control the explosive plays on defense, then our system isn't worth it."

The quarterback battle continues to rage on, as we see the athleticism from Gino Campiotti,Ā the dual threat ability from Zamar Wise, Brady Olson'sĀ arm, and freshman Chase Brewster learning the system.

"They each bring something different. I like all those guys. It's just about who's going to step up and take charge.'
Michael Boland Inspirational Award
Before today's event, the Minutemen awarded the 2021-2022Ā Michael Boland Inspirational Award recipients.Ā Boland was a four-year letterman at the University of Massachusetts (2013, '15-17) and a stalwart on the offensive line at right guard. He appeared in 43 career games and made 36 starts, with 32 of those as the team's right guard. He passed away suddenly at home in Maryland on Feb. 4, 2017 while preparing for the NFL Draft.
The 2021-2022 recipients this season were Cletus Mathurin and Max Longman. The award is given annually to one offensive and one defensive player who reflect Boland's characteristics, including his hard-working attitude, determination, integrity and commitment to UMass football.

Looking ahead
The Minutemen open the season on Saturday, Sept. 3 at Tulane. The McGuirk Alumni Stadium opener will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17 against Stony Brook University.
