Philoxy's Season-High 26 Points Aids Women's Basketball To 89-59 Triumph Over Duquesne On Senior Day

February 13, 2022 | Women's Basketball

The Minutewomen tied the most wins in program history with the victory.

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Destiney Philoxy recorded a season best 26 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, as the University of Massachusetts women's basketball topped Duquesne University, 89-59, on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center. The Senior Day win improves UMass to 20-5 on the season, tying the program record of the most wins in a single season with the 1995-96 and 2019-20 seasons.

Along with the Minutewomen's overall record, they are also 8-3 in the Atlantic 10 conference, while Duquesne moved to 9-15 overall and 4-8 in the league.

Philoxy tied her career-high of four three-pointers made as the Queens, N.Y., native went 11-for-17 from the field, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. In addition to Philoxy, four other Minutewomen reached double figures. Sydney Taylor finished with 18 points, going 3-for-5 from behind the arc, followed by Sam Breen (13), Ber'Nyah Mayo (11) and Angelique Ngalakulondi (10). Mayo was one rebound shy of a double-double, coming down nine, and had a game best four steals.

Massachusetts outrebound the Dukes, 44-28, and shot 72.7 percent from the free throw line, sinking 8-of-11. UMass also made 36 of its 71 attempts from the field, shooting 50.7 percent.

The Minutewomen picked up an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter, before extending their lead to 12-6, thanks to a triple from Philoxy. A made free throw from Duquesne cut its deficit to five, but UMass went on a 7-1 run to push ahead 19-8 at the 2:41 mark. Breen made a layup at 1:11 of the first to complete the scoring at 21-11 to end the quarter.

In the second, Massachusetts put up 18 points with seven from Philoxy alone. UMass also went on a 12-3 run that elapsed three minutes and 21 seconds to lead 39-20. The Minutewomen continued its run, pushing it to 18-3, extending their lead to 43-20 in the third quarter. Massachusetts scored 25 points in the third and the fourth quarters, while the Dukes tallied 22 and 17 in the third and fourth, respectively, to bring the contest to its final total of 89-59.
