Minutemen Fall To Army In Season Finale

The Black Knights posted a 44-7 win in their first trip to Amherst.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts football wrapped up its 2022 campaign today, falling to Army by a score of 44-7 at McGuirk Alumni Stadium (10,119).
Jalen Mackie led the Massachusetts defense with a career-high 19 total tackles (four solo) in addition to 1.0 TFL. Billy Wooden had nine tackles on the day (three solo), while Te'Rai Powell recorded 1.5 TFL.
Offensively, Cameron Sullivan-Brown had six catches for 48 yards and Ellis Merriweather rushed five times for 49 yards and also had a 27-yard catch before leaving the game due to injury.
Brady Olson finished 13-for-24 passing for the Minutemen, while Gino Campiotti recorded the lone touchdown for the Minutemen, posting a two-yard touchdown run as UMass scored first.
How It Happened
The Minutemen took the opening kickoff and drove 75-yards on nine plays with Gino Campiotti finishing off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run. Highlighting the drive, Ellis Merriweather caught a swing pass he turned in to a 27-yard gain while Isaac Ross had a 19-yard pass to Isaac Ross. Merriweather also totaled 36 yards rushing on the drive.
Army took advantage of a UMass fumble, which was recovered on the UMass 35-yardline. Five plays later, Army tied it up with a Jakobi Buchanan rushing touchdown with 3:54 left in the first quarter.
Tyhier Tyler posted a 27-yard rushing touchdown early in the second quarter to give the Black Knights a 14-7 lead. Tyler then capped off a five play, 50-yard drive with another rushing touchdown, scored with 11:05 left in the second.
Tyler added a third rushing touchdown late in the second quarter to make it a 28-7 game at halftime.
The Minutemen held Army to a three and out to start the second half.
Then Cameron Sullivan-Brown appeared to snag a 55-yard touchdown grab but the teams were called for offsetting penalties and UMass was eventually forced to punt. On its next possession, UMass drove down to the goal line but turned the ball over on downs.
Army added a pair of rushing touchdowns and a field goal to close out the scoring.

"It was a hard-fought game, no question … I don't think there was a lack of effort, energy, in any shape, manner or form, and that's kind of been the theme of this football team over the last several weeks. The reality is, I see tons of improvement in our team, and obviously, we just have to have it translate to wins. We [just had] too many turnovers at inopportune times."
