Breen, Merriweather Tabbed UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

The graduate students will be honored at Wednesday's UMass Sports Luncheon.
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts graduate students Sam Breen of women's basketball and Ellis Merriweather of football have been titled UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive, as announced on Tuesday. The pair will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, November 16, in the Berkshire Room at the Berkshire Dining Commons.
The Lunch will run from noon to 1 p.m., with the speaking program set to kick off at 12:15 p.m. The luncheon will feature Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Greg Cannella and Head Football Coach Don Brown as the week's featured speakers. The cost of the lunch is $14 at the door, $10 for UMass alumni.Â
With the Minutewomen basketball team going 1-1 on the week, Breen finished with 24.5 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game. In the season opener against Central Connecticut State, the graduate student matched a career-best 31 points, averaging 66.7 percent from both the field (14-for-21) and from the free throw line (2-of-3). The forward also came down with eight rebounds, and had two assists and one steal.
Merriweather rushed for a season-high 122 yards in UMass' narrow defeat at Arkansas State on Saturday while also scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns and adding a two-point conversion. The running back totaled the 122 yards on 29 carries for a 4.2 yards per carry clip while adding two catches for 14 yards.
