Minutemen wrap 15-practice slate with modified Offense vs. Defense Spring Game
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts football concluded its 2021 Spring Ball practice slate with a modified Spring Game on Sat., May 1. The day included 15 total possessions in an offense vs. defense format, including eight drives where the offense opened on a set yard line and seven red zone drives which each started on the 25 yard line.
The team employed a modified scoring system which allowed the defense to record points during specific, traditionally non-scoring plays, including three-and-outs, fourth down stops, turnovers forced and holding the offense to a field goal in the red zone. The offense and defense could score through traditional manners as well.
The defense won the full-field, eight-possession opening portion to the spring game, 10-7, on the strength of a fourth down stops during the first, fourth and eighth possessions, and three-and-outs during the second and sixth drives. Tyler Lytle and Tray Pettway, both newcomers this spring, connected for a touchdown during the third possession. Lytle dropped back and fired a pass across the middle, which Pettway hauled in before he raced into the endzone for the 32-yard score.
The offense took the red zone section of the spring game, 27-22, thanks to a Cameron Carson field goal on the final series. Lytle earned his second passing touchdown of the day during the first series when he found Josiah Johnson open in the back of the endzone for a tip-toe touchdown. Noah Boykin provided a big play for the defense when he picked off Garrett Dzuro during the fifth possession.
The offense led 24-18 entering the seventh possession and the defense needed a stop to swing the points total in their favor as holding the offense without a touchdown or field goal would have meant seven points for the defense. However, when the offense stalled at the 14 yard line, Carson lined up for and drilled a 24-yard field goal for the 27-22 victory.
Massachusetts football will open its 2021 season with a Sat., Sept. 4 trip to the University of Pittsburgh. The Minutemen play their first home game of the year when Boston College visits McGuirk Alumni Stadium for a Sat., Sept. 11 tilt. All kickoff times for the 2021 season will be announced at a later date.
