Women's Basketball Moves On To The Semifinals Of The Gulf Coast Showcase With 81-63 Win Over South Dakota State

Minutewomen compete against the winner of the UCLA/Kent State match on Saturday at 5 p.m.
ESTERO, Fla. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball team defeated South Dakota State, 81-63, on Friday morning at Hertz Arena, to reach the semifinals of the Gulf Coast Showcase on Saturday.
The victory improves UMass to a 6-0 overall record on the year, marking the best start of a season for the Minutewomen since the 1978-79 season.
Sydney Taylor put up 23 points to lead UMass offensively, shooting 7-of-14 (50.0 percent) from the field and making 6-of-8 from the charity stripe (75.0 percent). Sam Breen followed with 19 points, averaging 45.0 field goal percentage. Ber'Nyah Mayo and Destiney Philoxy also finished in double figures, logging 12 and 11, respectively.
Taylor and Philoxy both made three three-pointers, as Mayo knocked down two. Breen and Mayo led the team in rebounds, both grabbing nine boards with three offensive rebounds and six defensive rebounds. Breen also sat atop the leaderboard with five assists and four steals.
As a team, UMass averaged 50.0 percent (9-for-18) from behind the arc, and had a 73.7 free throw percentage, sinking 14 of its 19 attempts.
Massachusetts started the contest on a 7-0 run that lasted 4:06 minutes, before South Dakota State made a three-point shot to make it 7-3. UMass maintained the lead in with Mayo notching eight of the team's 18 points to end the first quarter with a score of 18-10.
In the second quarter, Taylor scored 10 points to help the Minutewomen to a 37-26 lead heading into the half. Both Taylor and Philoxy registered a three-pointer, with Breen pitching in four points and Shavonne Smith adding one.
UMass had a 12-0 run starting at the 06:19 mark of the third, extending its lead to 55-35. The Minutewomen logged 10 more points with the Jack Rabbits only earning seven more for a 65-42 contest with one quarter remaining.
The final quarter saw Massachusetts total 19 more points to bring the game to its final score. Breen and Taylor each drained a three, aiding them to their final point totals.
