Former Rutgers, Northern Iowa rusher joins UMass coaching staff
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts football and head coach Walt Bell announced the addition of Savon Huggins to the staff as the team's running backs coach on Thursday.
Â
Huggins comes to UMass following one season on the University of Buffalo football staff. He served as a wide receivers assistant during the 2020 season, during which the Bulls went 6-1 overall, including 5-0 in the MAC, won the Camellia Bowl and ended the year ranked No. 25 in the nation.
Â
While at Buffalo, Huggins helped the Bulls' wide receivers corps average 13.6 yards per catch across nine receivers and post seven touchdowns. Antonio Nunn highlighted the group as an All-MAC Second Team honoree and an East-West Shrine Bowl selection.
Â
Previously, Huggins coached at the high school level with three seasons on-staff at Somerville High School (N.J.) as a running backs, receivers and defensive backs coach and one at his alma mater, St. Peter's Prep.
Â
In his lone season coaching at St. Peter's Prep, Huggins guided the running backs as the Marauders won the 2019 Group 4 State Championship and reached the No. 1 ranking in the NJ.com Top-20. Somerville won 32 games, three Mid-State 38 Conference Championships and the 2016 Central Group 3 Sectional Championship during his tenure from 2016-18.
Â
Huggins spent four seasons at Rutgers (2011-14) and capped his Scarlet Knight days with 261 carries for 842 yards and nine touchdowns. Rutgers appeared in four bowl games during his four seasons and claimed the school's first-ever Big East Championship. He spent one season at the University of Northern Iowa in 2015, accumulated 216 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and helped the Panthers reached the NCAA Division I FCS Championship Quarterfinals.
Â
Huggins graduated Rutgers in 2014 with a degree in economics and earned a master's degree in education from Northern Iowa in 2015.
