Award honors college football's top community servant
FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. - University of Massachusetts senior linebacker Cole McCubrey and redshirt junior tight end Solomon Siskind earned placement on the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, as announced by the award's selection committee on Thursday. The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
McCubrey - a starter in all 12 games during 2019 - led Massachusetts with 84 tackles (46-38) and had 1.0 sacks among 4.5 TFLs. He also broke up two passes, forced a fumble and recorded one quarterback hurry. The 6-foot-1 Boylston, Massachusetts, native provided three games of 10 or more tackles and averaged 7.0 tackles per game during his junior year.
Off the field, McCubrey volunteered his time, along with his teammates, in conjunction with Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless' A Bed For Every Child initiative, and at the Amherst Boys and Girls Club. He is a dean's list student in the classroom and is working towards a bachelor of business administration degree in finance.
Siskind, who missed time due to injury, is back to full strength entering 2020. The Brockton, Massachusetts, native is studying in the Isenberg School of Management - the No. 1 public business school in the Northeast. He is working for a bachelor of science degree in sports management.
Siskind is a UMass Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Executive Board Member and earned selection as the UMass male representative at the 2019 Black Student-Athlete Summit in Austin, Texas. Siskind also participated in the team's support of A Bed For Every Child, which constructed 35 beds for children in need across Massachusetts, and donated his time at the Amherst Boys and Girls Club. Additionally, he is a Diversity & Inclusion Sub Committee Liaison and is a member of College Athlete Unity (CAU), a student-athlete racial and social justice group.
The Wuerffel Trophy is named for 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel. The formal announcement of the 2020 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation's festivities in New York City on Dec. 8. The presentation of the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 52nd All Sports Association Awards Banquet on Feb. 19, 2021 in Fort Walton Beach.
