AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's swimming & diving senior Maja Boric, women's basketball senior Vashnie Perry and hockey junior John Leonard have been named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive College Credit Union.
Â
Boric was named Most Outstanding Diver of the Atlantic 10 Championship after winning both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter dives over the four-day meet. Boric opened up day one on Wed., Feb. 19 by winning her second straight 1-Meter Dive with a score of 284.30 before scoring 335.10 in the 3-Meter finals to win it. The senior became the fifth consecutive UMass diver to win the award and it marked the 16th time in program history a Minutewoman claimed the honors.
Â
Leonard scored four goals, one which came on the power play, in a weekend split with No. 14/15 UMass Lowell. On Fri., Feb. 21, the Amherst native scored his 50th career goal, becoming the first Minuteman to reach the milestone as a junior having played his entire career in Hockey East. In Saturday's 5-3 victory he carried UMass to the win, breaking a 3-3 tie with less than five minutes to go in regulation and adding another highlight reel goal on the empty netter to complete his second hat trick in the past three games. With his three-goal performance, Leonard took over the national lead in goals as he now has 24 on the season, which also set UMass records for most goals scored in a season in the program's Hockey East era (tied for fifth all-time), most goals scored in Hockey East play in a season (18), tied the program's single-season record for game-winning goals (5) and took over sole possession of the program's career game-winning goals record (9).
Â
Perry was the catalyst for the Minutewomen in a crucial win over Davidson on Sat., Feb. 22. Her 23 points were a game-high and career-high 23 on 10-of-16 from the field (62.5 percent). She also handed out three assists as the Minutewomen picked up their 17th win of the season, tying the most since 2006-07.
