Javohn Garcia Named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

December 14, 2020 | Men's Basketball

Garcia averaged 20.5 points per game and shot 80% from three-point range last weekend

AMHERST, Mass. – After averaging 20.5 points per game and shooting 80% from three-point range in his first two collegiate games, freshman guard Javohn Garcia has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week.

The Columbus, Ohio native, who also averaged 3.0 rebounds per game, 3.5 assists per game and shot 62.5% overall from the floor, helped the Minutemen to a series split with Northeastern to open the 2020-21 season.

In his UMass debut on Friday, Garcia dropped 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting (2-of-3 from three) and four assists against the Huskies to help lead Massachusetts to a 95-79 victory on opening day. Garcia's 23 points tied teammate T.J. Weeks Jr.'s total for the most points in a collegiate debut in more than 20 years.

Garcia followed that up on Sunday in his first collegiate start by leading all Minutemen with 18 points (6-of-11 shooting), four rebounds, three assists and three steals in 35 minutes of action in Boston.

Garcia and UMass will be back in action on Wednesday when the Minutemen travel to Philadelphia for their Atlantic 10 opener at La Salle. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
