Will Koch goes 12-of-18 in his first collegiate start at quarterback
Koch completed passes to five different receivers on the day, led by Samuel Emilus' six grabs for 29 yards and a touchdown. Ellis Merriweather led the charge on the ground with 10 carries for 31 yards. The Herd was sparked by Brenden Knox's 118 yards on the ground and two scores, while Grant Wells had 228 yards in the air and three touchdowns.
After Marshall took an early 7-0 lead on a Knox 45-yard run, the Minutemen responded in a big way with a six-play, 80-yard drive highlighted by a flea flicker from Koch to Taylor Edwards for 37 yards. The play setup a completion from Koch to Emilus for two yards and a Massachusetts touchdown to make it 7-7 with seven minutes to play in the first quarter.
Knox, who finished the day with 118 yards on the ground on 14 carries, found the endzone for the second time on the day with 2:02 to go in the first quarter to give The Herd a 14-7 edge, setting up 17 straight points from Marshall to give the hosts a 24-7 lead with six minutes left until half.
Jeremy Martin recorded his first field goal at the FBS level when he converted at 46-yard attempt late in the second quarter the bring the Minutemen within 14 at 24-10, the longest field goal for Massachusetts since Logan Laurent's 48-yard conversion at No. 16 Mississippi State on Nov. 3, 2017.
Marshall, however, would take over from there to put the hosts up for good in the second half.
Mike Ruane led the Minutemen on the defensive side with nine tackles, while Zack Magdis, Avien Peah and Tanner Davis added seven apiece.
The Minutemen will be back in action on November 20 when Massachusetts travels to FAU for an 8 p.m. kickoff on CBSSN.
