McCall To Participate In Coaches vs. Cancer Panel On November 10
November 02, 2020 | Men's Basketball
Registration is free of charge and open to the public
AMHERST, Mass. – Ahead of the start of the 2020-21 season, UMass men's basketball head coach Matt McCall will join seven fellow coaches from around New England for Coaches vs. Cancer: a discussion with the men's Division I basketball coaches of Massachusetts.
The Zoom webinar will be held on November 10 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and registration for fans is currently open and free of charge. The panel will be moderated by Stadium's Jeff Goodman.
McCall enters his fourth season at the helm of the Minutemen with arguably his most talented team since he arrived in Amherst. The Minutemen return reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Tre Mitchell, who burst onto the scene in Amherst with one of the top freshman seasons in program history in 2019-20. Mitchell, who was also named to the A-10 Second Team and to the league's rookie team, finished the year averaging 22.9 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game over his final nine games. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native became the first rookie since Marcus Camby in 1994 to be named to the Atlantic 10's First, Second or Third team.
Mitchell was a six-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week selection, the most for a Minuteman since Rashaun Freeman in 2003-04, and broke the UMass freshman record for field goals in a season with 206, previously held by Jim McCoy (193 in 1988-89). Mitchell was also on pace to break the freshman points record, finishing eight shy of tying the program record of 555.
Mitchell will be flanked by T.J. Weeks, who had his season cut short due to injury in 2019-20, as well as senior captain Carl Pierre.
The Minutemen will also welcome a group of six newcomers in 2020-21: Ronnie DeGray III, Dyondre Dominguez, Noah Fernandes, Javohn Garcia, Mark Gasperini and Cairo McCrory.
"It's a very talented group," said McCall. "We needed this class to elevate and help get us to the top of the league, and we feel like we've done that with this group. This group coming in will have a year or two of prep school that will be ready to play from Day One, and I don't look at those guys like freshmen."
