Pro Football Focus recognizes UMass football standout as top kick return specialist in the nation
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts senior cornerback and return specialist Isaiah Rodgers earned Pro Football Focus (PFF) All-America First Team as the nation's top kick returner on Monday. Rodgers concluded his 12-game season with 53 kick returns for 1,295 yards, both of which rank as the No. 1 totals among all FBS players during the 2019 season.
The Tampa, Florida, native reset the UMass single-season and career records for kick returns and kick return yards during his senior year in 2019. He capped his standout career with 99 returns for 2,338 yards. Rodgers produced 41 more kick returns than the next Minuteman all-time (Courtney Robinson, 58, 2006-08) and he totaled 950 more kick return yards to displace Robinson for the top spot (1,388).
Rodgers was also the team's primary punt return specialist in 2019. He fielded 11 punts and brought them back for a combined 120 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown at Charlotte on Sept. 21.
In addition to serving as the team's top return specialist and playing a role on special teams coverage, Rodgers started all 12 games at cornerback. He totaled 42 tackles including 3.0 TFLs, four interceptions, 10 pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
