Mitchell Drops 23 As UMass Topples Maine, 74-53

Mitchell led four Minutemen in double-figures as UMass moves to 6-6
AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Tre Mitchell had 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting to lead four Minutemen in double-figures as the UMass men's basketball team (6-6) built on a nine-point halftime lead to pull away from Maine (3-9) on Friday night at the Mullins Center, 74-53.
Mitchell scored from all over the floor on the night, going 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and adding seven rebounds. Fellow rookie C.J. Jackson added a career-high 10 points off the bench to go along with a team-high three steals, while Carl Pierre (14 points, four assists) and Sean East II (12 points, five rebounds, six assists) also reached double-digits. Keon Clergeot had a game-high seven assists and two steals.
Leading 37-28 at the break, Massachusetts kicked off the second half with eight straight points in the first four minutes of the half to go up by 17. The Minutemen would stay in control from there, not allowing the Black Bears to get closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Overall, UMass shot 44.6% from the floor (29-of-65) and 37.9% from three (11-of-29) while limiting Maine to a 19-of-48 showing and 4-of-16 from three. Nedeljko Prijovic led the Black Bears with 14 points, while Sergio El Darwich had a game-high eight boards with six points and four assists.
After Maine started the game up 10-8 in the first four minutes, the Minutemen used a 23-3 surge over a 7:32 span to open up an 18-point lead midway through the half, its largest of the half. Mitchell dropped 11 of his 16 first half points during the run, along with five from Jackson off the bench. Pierre and East II teamed up for four dimes apiece for a Massachusetts team that shot nearly 42% (15-of-36) in the half.
Maine, though, scored 15 of the final 21 points of the half and held UMass without a point for the final 2:07 to close the gap to 37-28 Minutemen at the break. Mykhailo Yagodin, Prijovic and El Darwich all had six points for the Black Bears, who shot 9-of-28 from the floor in the half.
UMass will return from the holiday break on Dec. 30 when the Minutemen travel to Akron in the final nonconference matchup of the season before kicking off Atlantic 10 play on Jan. 5 at Saint Louis.
