Massachusetts Football Loses To Army Black Knights
November 09, 2019 | Football
Ruane notches career-high 16 tackles, recovers fumble
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Brito started at quarterback. He went 6-for-16 with 75 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Redshirt senior Randall West also took snaps and finished 3-of-5 for 24 yards with one interception.
Redshirt junior Bilal Ally ran for 26 yards as the starting running back on 10 carries. Redshirt senior tight end Kyle Horn had 56 yards on his lone catch. Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Zak Simon added two grabs covering 21 yards.
Mike Ruane tallied 16 tackles, a single-game personal best for the junior linebacker and the most by a Minuteman this season. He also had a fumble recovery, his second consecutive game scooping up a loose ball. Ruane is the first Minuteman with fumble recoveries in back-to-back games since Steve Casali did so against FIU on Sept. 17, 2016 and at No. 21 Mississippi State on Sept. 24, 2016.
Redshirt sophomore linebacker Xavier Steele notched 11 takedowns and redshirt sophomore position-mate Tyris Lebeau added 10 stops, both personal bests. It marks the second consecutive game for the Minutemen with two players at or above 10 tackles in the game as Logan Darby had 13 and Cole McCubrey notched 12 against Liberty on Nov. 2, 2019.
Army scored first with one of McCoy's three touchdowns on the day before the Minutemen equalized.
On Massachusetts' second drive of the day, the Maroon and White employed a trick play for a 56-yard touchdown completion. Brito handed off the Ally, who rushed to the right. Johnson, Jr., shifted from his spot at wide receiver, fielded a rugby style pop pass from Ally and flipped the ball back to Brito, standing at the center of the field on the UMass 33 yard line. Brito then stepped into a throw that sailed to the Army 33 yard line, where Horn reeled in the pass and ran untouched into the endzone.
The Black Knights put in the next four scoring possessions, which included two more touchdowns for McCoy and headed into halftime with a 35-7 advantage.
Army controlled tempo throughout the remainder of the game with success in its triple-option offense to the tune of a 41:13-to-18:47 margin in time of possession, and put in four more touchdowns to reach the final score.
Massachusetts plays its final road game of the season next with a trip to Evanston, Illinois, for its first-ever tilt with Northwestern on Sat., Nov. 16. The game will be played at either Noon or 3:30 p.m., live on the Big Ten Network.
