November 23, 2019 | Football

Ally runs for 127 yards, touchdown; Ogbonna tallies 3.0 TFLs in 56-24 loss

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts football ended its 2019 season against BYU at McGuirk Alumni Stadium with a 56-24 loss on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt junior running back Bilal Ally posted 127 rushing yards over 26 carries in the game, including a 46-yard touchdown scamper, while junior linebacker Chinedu Ogbonna tallied 3.0 TFLs, including a sack, and senior safety Martin Mangram posted a game-high 10 tackles.

Redshirt sophomore Andrew Brito started at quarterback, but had his day cut short due to injury. He went 5-of-9 for 15 yards passing. Redshirt senior Randall West took over for Brito and was 15-of-21 for 131 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Redshirt freshman tight end Josiah Johnson was the top target with four catches for 49 yards and one touchdown.

In addition to Mangram and Ogbonna's efforts on defense, redshirt sophomore linebacker Xavier Steele had his first collegiate sack among four total takedowns.

Senior cornerback and return specialist Isaiah Rodgers recorded two solo tackles and a pass breakup, as well as five kickoff returns covering 84 yards and an 11-yard punt return before leaving the game due to injury in the second quarter. Rodgers, a four-year starter at cornerback, ended his career with 188 tackles – including 9.5 for loss – 11 interceptions for 242 yards and 35 pass breakups. He also finishes as the program's career leader in kick returns (99) and kick return yards (2,338).

Zach Wilson was 17-of-20 for 293 yards and four touchdowns as the starter at quarterback for BYU. Joe Critchlow also saw snaps for the Cougars and went 4-for-7 covering 15 yards. Talon Shumway was Wilson and Critchlow's most frequent target to the tune of four catches for 92 yards and one touchdown. Jackson McChesney led the Cougars with 228 rushing yards on 15 carries, including two touchdowns.

The Cougars led at halftime, 49-0, through four touchdown passes by Wilson, and rushing scores by Aleva Hifo, Lopini Katoa and McChesney.

Massachusetts found the endzone on the team's opening drive of the second half. After BYU muffed a punt and Cam Roberson recovered the ball at the Cougars' 12 yard line, West connected with Zak Simon on the next play for six points.

On the team's next drive, Garcia added three to the UMass scoreline with his 16th career field goal conversion in 20 attempts. With Garcia's 29-yard field goal against the Cougars, the junior college transfer joined the program's career list for field goal conversion percentage (.800) and graduates second all-time behind only Brendon Levengood (.810; 17-21).

The Minutemen scored twice in the fourth quarter through a 20-yard West completion to Johnson first before Ally broke off a 46-yard run to reach the final score.

Massachusetts will begin the 2020 season on the road at UConn on Thurs., Sept. 3. The first home game at McGuirk Alumni Stadium awaits after, when Troy visits campus on Sat., Sept. 12. Times for both contests will be announced at later dates.
