Sean East II Collects Atlantic 10 Rookie Of The Week Honors

It is the first time since 2003-04 that UMass earns back-to-back A-10 Rookie of the Week honors
AMHERST, Mass. – After averaging 16 points, 6.5 assists per game and landing the No. 1 spot on SportsCenter's Top Ten Plays, UMass men's basketball freshman Sean East II has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

It is the second straight week that a Minuteman has earned rookie of the week distinction after T.J. Weeks picked up the accolade last week. It marks the first time since the 2003-04 season that UMass has had consecutive A-10 Rookie of the Week accolades.

The Minutemen, one 74 unbeaten teams in the nation and one of 33 teams unbeaten through at least four games, is back in action on Wednesday night when Massachusetts hosts Rider at 7 p.m. as part of the Air Force Reserve Tip Off Tournament, pres. by Citi. The game will be broadcasted live on NESN and streamed on ESPN+Â

East II stole the national spotlight on Tuesday night against Northeastern when the guard buried a 75-foot buzzer beater with 0.6 seconds left in the first half to lead the Minutemen to an 80-71 victory over the Huskies. The Louisville, Ky. native finished with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting (2-of-2 from three) and seven assists.

He followed that up with another 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting against CCSU on Saturday afternoon to help UMass to its first 40+ point victory since 1995 in an 89-43 win over the Blue Devils. East II added a game-high six assists in the game.

East II has started all four games at point guard for the Minutemen early in the season, averaging a team-high 14.3 points per game. He is 23rd in the nation, and fifth among rookies, with a 5.2 assist-turnover ratio, and is also tied for 20th in the NCAA and fourth among freshmen with 26 total assists.
