East II and Leidel Named UMass Student-Athletes of the Week

Basketball duo to be honored Wednesday at the UMass Sports Luncheon

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's basketball freshman Sean East II and women's basketball senior Hailey Leidel have been named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive College Credit Union.
 
Both East II and Leidel will be recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wed., Nov. 20 at noon in Berkshire Dining Commons. Guest speakers at the luncheon will be head football coach Walt Bell, women's basketball assistant coach Mike Leflar and head tennis coach Juancarlos Nunez.
 
East II played 34 minutes against Northeastern on Nov. 12, scoring a season-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and adding seven assists. He made a 75-foot buzzer-beater in the first half that was the No. 1 play on SportsCenter's Top Ten Plays. On Nov. 16 he played 25 minutes against Central Connecticut, finishing with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, three rebounds, six assists and three steals. The Louisville, Kentucky native is tied for 27th in the nation and fourth among freshmen in assist-turnover ratio (5.2), 25th and fourth among freshmen in assists per game (6.5) and 16th in total assists (26; third among freshmen).
 
In a 2-0 week for the Minutewomen, Leidel averaged a team-high 18.5 points as Massachusetts knocked off UMass Lowell (Nov. 14) and Hartford (Nov. 17). She shot 63.2 percent from the field on the week, including 60 percent from three-point land and turned the ball over just once in each contest over the course of 32 and 23 minutes, respectively. In both contests, Leidel led all scorers with 20 points at UMass Lowell and again vs. Hartford (17 pts). In the process, the Brownstown, Michigan product moved up to No. 8 on the UMass all-time career scoring list (1,408 points).
 
Free parking for the luncheon is available in Lot 33 on University Drive (click here for voucher). In addition, metered parking in the Southwest Horseshoe and along Fearing Street is available. Including tax, lunch costs $12.31 and $10.70 for UMass alumni.
 
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Sports Luncheon will not be held next week (Nov. 27) and will return on Wed., Dec. 4.
