T.J. Weeks named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

November 11, 2019 | Men's Basketball

AMHERST, Mass. – After averaging 16 points per game to help the UMass basketball team start the season 2-0, freshman T.J. Weeks has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Weeks' 23-point performance against UMass Lowell last week marked the most for a Minuteman in his collegiate debut in more than 20 seasons, and the most for any UMass player in a season opener since Trey Davis poured in 28 against Siena to kick off the 2014-15 season. Since 1999, only eight players have scored at least 23 points in the season opener. Weeks also added three rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the win over the River Hawks.

The Warwick, R.I. native followed that up with a nine-point performance on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc and six boards against Fairfield on Saturday, helping UMass erase a 10-point deficit and pick up a victory on the road, 62-60.

Weeks and the Minutemen return home on Tuesday to host Northeastern at 7 p.m. from the Mullins Center. In honor of Veteran's Day, the Minutemen want to show their eternal gratitude to all those who have served. UMass will be recognizing individuals and organizations that provide support for all veterans, and all military members are eligible for two free tickets.
