Ally eclipses 1,000 career rushing yards during game

RUSTON, La. – University of Massachusetts football redshirt junior running back Bilal Ally reached 1,000 career rushing yards and the Minutemen recovered three Louisiana Tech turnovers, but the Maroon and White fell to the Bulldogs, 69-21 at Joe Aillet Stadium in Ruston, Louisiana on Saturday evening.
Ā
Redshirt senior Michael Curtis started at quarterback and went 8-for-14 with 49 yards and one interception. Curtis' classmate Randall West took over under center in the second quarter and finished 17-of-29 with 172 yards, one passing touchdown and one interception. West also ran for one touchdown.
Ā
Ally capped the night with 10 carries for 92 yards, including one for a touchdown. It pushed Ally over 1,000 yards for his career. Ally reached quadruple digits via 212 carries, an average of 4.7 per rush.
Ā
Curtis and West spread the football to 10 receivers, led by redshirt sophomore Zak Simon with four catches for 43 yards. Redshirt senior tight end Kyle Horn added four receptions for 22 yards, including his second touchdown of the year.
Ā
On defense, freshman cornerback Josh Wallace recorded a career-high eight tackles while he also forced and recovered a fumble.
Ā
Senior Isaiah Rodgers posted two tackles and a pass breakup at cornerback while he spearheaded the UMass return game with 187 yards over eight kick returns. It included a career-long 87-yard run-back in the second quarter which set up Massachusetts in the red zone during its first touchdown drive.
Ā
Louisiana Tech recorded touchdowns on its opening six drives before Massachusetts generated two scoring series.
Ā
Rodgers shortened the field for the offense with the longest kick return of his career, juking a host of LA Tech defenders and shedding multiple tackles before he was finally tripped up at the 11 yard line. Three plays later, West rumbled in from one yard out for the first UMass points of the night.
Ā
Two LA Tech fumbles helped Massachusetts reach paydirt again.
Ā
On the ensuing LA Tech drive, DeAndre Marcus broke through the UMass defense and was headed for the endzone before Wallace and Elijah Johnson converged on him at the five yard line. As Johnson dragged Marcus down from the right, Wallace ripped the football out from Marcus' arms and scooped it up in the endzone for a touchback.
Ā
After the ensuing offensive series stalled, George Georgopoulos booted a 40-yard punt to the LA Tech 36 yard line. Return man Smoke Harris muffed the punt, which Tanner Davis dove on top of to regain possession for the offense.
Ā
West stepped back onto the field and guided the team to its second touchdown with a five-play series that ended in a 12-yard pass toĀ Horn.
Ā
Ally ran for Massachusetts' third touchdown of the night during the third quarter. Having already secured 1,000 career yards with his final carry in the first quarter, Ally broke free for his longest run of the night for the score. Facing a third-and-12 at the UMass 49 yard line, Ally bounced to his right and raced down the LA Tech bench sideline 51 yards for the tally.
Ā
LA Tech reached the final score when it added a 30-yard touchdown run in the third and 13-yard TD reception in the fourth.

Massachusetts enters its bye week and does not play again until Homecoming against UConn at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Sat., Oct. 26. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. Ticket information is available through 866-UMASS-TIX.
