Garcia Wins Lou Groza Award Star of the Week

Redshirt senior kicker went 3-of-3 on field goals, 4-for-4 on extra points in 37-29 win over Akron

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - University of Massachusetts redshirt senior Cooper Garcia was one of three placekickers from across FBS chosen for the Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week. Garcia was a perfect and single-game personal best 3-of-3 on field goals as well as 4-for-4 on extra point attempts in the team's 37-29 win over Akron on Saturday.

Garcia drilled field goals of 30, 34 and 38 yards as his 13 points helped seal the team's eight-point victory over the Zips. He connected on his 30 and 38-yard tries during the second quarter as UMass built a 20-14 advantage at halftime. The California native added his 34-yard make early in the fourth quarter to put extend the advantage to 37-21.

Garcia is the second Minuteman to win Lou Groza Award Star of the Week honors after Logan Laurent did so following the 30-27 double-overtime win against Appalachian State during 2017 Homecoming. Laurent tied the game with five seconds remaining in the fourth quarter before he won it in the second overtime with a 36-yard conversion.

Massachusetts plays next in Miami, Florida, at FIU on Sat., Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. The Minutemen return to McGuirk Alumni Stadium for Homecoming on Sat., Oct. 26 at 3:30 p.m.
