Former UMass football standout scored once, posted game-highs in receptions and receiving yards
MOBILE, Ala. - Former University of Massachusetts football wide receiver Andy Isabella highlighted the 2019 Reese's Senior Bowl with seven receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown along with a 14-yard first down rush as the North Team defeated the South Team, 34-24 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
"It was an honor to have the chance to wear the Reese's Senior Bowl jersey this week and compete with and against so many of the best players in the country," Isabella said. "I cannot show enough thanks to UMass football for preparing me for this opportunity, the Senior Bowl committee for selecting me to play in this game and Coach Gruden and his staff for working with me all week. This experience was an absolute blast and it just makes me even more pumped to get back to work tomorrow."
Isabella's touchdown put the North Team up for good after the side trailed by as many as nine points in the first half. The Mayfield, Ohio, native hauled in a short slant pass from former Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, broke one tackle and zipped his way into the endzone from 19 yards out for a 17-12 advantage.
Of his eight touches, Isabella accounted for six first downs (five receiving, one rushing). He had at least one first down grab on four of the North Team's initial five scoring drives as the squad during its nine-point deficit into a 27-18 lead with eight minutes, five seconds to go in the game.
Among his receptions, Isabella twice converted fourth down plays for the North Team. He turned a 4th-and-4 play at the North Team's 42 yard line into an eight yard gain as the North marched into range for a Austin Siebert field goal try in the first quarter. He added a 23-yard catch on 4th-and-2 from the South Team's 46 yard line midway through the fourth quarter as the North Team extended its lead to 27-18.
A three-year starter at wide receiver for Massachusetts and the program's all-time receiving yardage record-holder, Isabella led both Reese's Senior Bowl sides with his seven receptions and 74 receiving yards. He was second on the team and in the game with his 88 all-purpose yards (former Memphis running back Tony Pollard, 89).
Isabella, a nine-time all-America selection following his senior season in 2018, ranked as the nation's FBS leader in receiving yards (1,698) and receiving yards per game (141.5). It equated to 288 yards and 24.0 yards per game more than the next-closest competitor (Antoine Wesley • Texas Tech • 1,410 • 117.5). Isabella also stood among the top-five nationally in total catches, receptions per game and touchdown receptions.
