Massachusetts Claims 49-31 Win Over Charlotte
September 22, 2018 | Football
Curtis throws two touchdowns, runs for two more in first career start at quarterback
ย
Curtis, who went 12-of-19 for 189 yards passing and rushed for 35 yards on nine carries, was thrust into the starting role following injuries to redshirt seniors Ross Comis and Andrew Ford.
ย
Andy Isabella hauled in six receptions for 85 yards, including one for a score. Marquis Young led the ground game with 74 yards on 12 carries (6.2 per rush), including two touchdown runs.
ย
Bryton Barr posted a career-high 21 tackles, the first game for a Minuteman with 20 or more since Jovan Santos-Knox had 20 against No. 19 Toledo on Oct. 24, 2015. His day included 4.0 TFLs for 19 yards lost, including an eight-yard sack.
ย
Barr's defensive performance led a stout effort that included 12.0 TFLs for 60 yards lost, including 4.0 sacks.
ย
Massachusetts needed only 31 seconds to score the game's opening 21 points.
ย
Young returned the first kickoff of the day 93 yards in 13 seconds for a 7-0 advantage. One drive later, Curtis found Isabella on the first play for a 15-yard score in eight seconds.
ย
Jake Byczko set the Minutemen up in the Charlotte redzone when he stripped the ball from 49ers quarterback Chris Reynolds and Young dove in from two yards away two plays later for the 21-0 lead. Byczko finished the day with four stops, including 2.0 tacks for 18 yards lost.
ย
Curtis padded the lead to 28-0 less than three minutes after Young's score. Curtis rolled to his left and scanned the endzone before he tucked the ball, lowered his left shoulder and rumbled in with eight minutes, 51 seconds still remaining in the opening quarter.
ย
Curtis factored into the next two UMass scores as well.
ย
He slotted a 29-yard reception to Jessie Britt with 65 seconds remaining in the second quarter and hurdled a trio of Charlotte defenders on a two-yard scoring dive at the 7:52 mark of the third quarter. His second rushing score padded the lead to 42-10.
ย
Young gave Massachusetts its final points of the night when he bounced a rushing attempt outside and took off down the UMass sideline for a 43-yard run eight seconds into the final frame.
