Anderson’s Double-Double Guides Men’s Hoops Past Duquesne, 85-75, on Senior Night

March 03, 2018 | Men's Basketball

Senior registers 12 points, ties career-high with 12 assists in regular season finale

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's basketball used a balanced effort with five double-figure scorers as the Minutemen topped Duquesne, 85-75, on Saturday at the Mullins Center. In conjunction with Senior Night, prior to the game UMass held a special ceremony recognizing senior C.J. Anderson as well as student managers Sam Rubenstein and Pat Kearney.

Anderson had a double-double with 12 points and 12 assists to pace the Minutemen. Malik Hines led all scorers with 20 points and Rayshawn Miller (16), Luwane Pipkins (16), Carl Pierre (15) and Anderson also contributed double-figure efforts. Hines went a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor and had a team-high five rebounds, while Pipkins recorded six dimes.

Anderson had 10 points in a closely-contested first half that was witness to six ties and seven lead changes. He shot 4-of-5 and made UMass' lone free throw of the period, awarded as a result of a technical foul assessed to Duquesne's Jordan Robinson with 2:34 on the clock. It was a strong rebounding half for the Dukes as the visitors posted a 16-9 advantage on the glass and held UMass without an offensive board for nearly 19 minutes to open the contest.

Rayshawn Miller both opened and closed the game's scoring in the first 20 minutes, knocking down a right corner triple just 22 seconds in. With 5.8 seconds left, Duquesne's Tarin Smith missed a free throw which was corralled by Unique McLean. Miller collected a pass from McLean and evaded Rene Castro-Caneddy, nailing a buzzer-beater in front of the Duquesne bench. The bucket was originally ruled a three-pointer but changed to a two-point basket after official review, sending the teams into the locker room tied at 33.

Miller strung together a productive stretch in the early stages out of the break. With just under 13 minutes remaining Khalea Turner-Morris was rejected in the post, but grabbed the loose ball and dished to Miller for a right wing triple. On the ensuing Duquesne possession, Eric Williams Jr. missed a three-pointer of his own, with Miller grabbing the rebound, sprinting up the floor and connecting from the free throw line. At that point, UMass had stretched its lead to 11 at 58-47, with Miller producing eight of UMass' last nine points. Momentum quickly swung in favor of Duquesne, however, as the Dukes put together an 11-0 run and evened the score at 58-apiece.

Massachusetts immediately responded with a 9-2 sequence that culminated with back-to-back Pipkins layups and forced Duquesne into a timeout. The Minutemen would ultimately cement the victory with 11 consecutive points in the final two minutes, highlighted by a Hines slam dunk that produced an and-one situation and brought the Mullins Center crowd to its feet. Anderson made a clutch pair of free throws with 25 seconds left before exiting to a standing ovation.

Mike Lewis II and Smith each contributed 17 points for the Dukes in the loss, while Williams came down with 11 rebounds.

The Minutemen now gear up for the First Round of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship, which will take place on Wed., March 7 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The A-10 will announce the full tournament bracket and seedings Saturday evening following the conclusion of games around the league. For complete details, visit A-10 Championship Central.
