Murray, Pipkins Named UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

Matt Murray improved to 10-0-0 on the season while Luwane Pipkins scored 24 points per game over the week.
AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore goaltender Matt Murray and junior guard Luwane Pipkins were named the UMassFive Student-Athletes of the Week after their performances last week during competition. The pair will be honored at the final weekly luncheon of the fall on Wednesday with guest speakers Track & Field Head Coach David Jackson and Hockey Head Coach Greg Carvel.

Murray (St. Albert, Alberta) improved to 10-0-0 on the season after backstopping UMass to a 3-1 win over No. 8 Quinnipiac on Saturday night in front of a record crown of 8,412 at the Mullins Center. The sophomore made 27 saves for a .964 save percentage and a 1.01 goals against-average as the Minutemen picked up their fourth win over a top-10 team this season while remaining a perfect 7-0-0 at home. The 10th win Murray put the goalkeeper tied for ninth in the UMass record book for wins in a season.

Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) dropped in 13 of his game-high 26 points in the second half comeback win over Providence Friday and added all five of his assists as UMass rallied back from down as many as 20 points in the opening half to win for the first time at Providence since 1979. Pipkins opened the week with 22 points at half against Holy Cross to go along with eight assists and four rebounds as he averaged 24 points, 6.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game over the week while shooting 12-of-15 from the free throw line as he was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week.

Hockey is back in action in the Mullins Center tomorrow at 7 p.m. against No. 18 Yale while the men's hoops squad will take on Temple on the road Wednesday before returning home on Friday night.
