Senior wide receiver selected as New England's top offensive player
BOSTON - University of Massachusetts senior wide receiver Andy Isabella won the prestigious George H. "Bulger" Lowe Award, given annually to the top offensive and defensive players as selected by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. Isabella earned the offensive player of the year recognition while Boston College junior defensive back Hamp Cheevers took home the defensive accolade.
Isabella currently leads all of FBS with 102 receptions, 1,698 receiving yards, 8.5 receptions per game and 141.5 receiving yards per game while he is tied for second with 13 touchdown catches. His receiving yards total ranks as the most in program history, while his 102 receptions and 13 touchdown catches stand second-most. His 1,698 receiving yards total as the most by a collegiate player across any level of competition, including FCS, Division II and Division III.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound former running back converted to wide receiver full-time prior to his sophomore season in 2016 and posted 3,519 of his 3,526 career receiving yards over his final three seasons (36 games). During his three-year tenure playing wide receiver at Massachusetts, Isabella averaged nearly 100 yards per appearance from 2016-18, after he had only two catches and seven yards as a true freshman in 2015.
Isabella becomes the ninth-ever Minutemen selected for the George H. "Bulger" Lowe Award and first since former quarterback Blake Frohnapfel took home the honor in 2014.
The duo head an all-star slate of players, coaches and officials to be honored at the club's annual Bob Whelan College Football Awards Night on Wed., Dec. 19, 2018 at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, Massachusetts.
