Massachusetts Football Concludes 2018 Season at No. 5 Georgia

November 17, 2018 | Football

Isabella sets program marks for single-season and career receiving yards during 15-catch, 219-yard, two-touchdown outing

ATHENS, Ga. – Senior wide receiver Andy Isabella set the University of Massachusetts football single-season and career receiving yards records during a 15-catch, 219-yard, two-touchdown outing as the Minutemen fell at No. 5 Georgia, 66-27 on Saturday afternoon.
Ā
Isabella needed 16 yards to reset the team's single-season total and 179 for the career record. He capped his career with 3,526 receiving yards on 231 receptions, including 30 for touchdowns. The 5-foot-10 speedster posted 102 catches for 1,698 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior.
Ā
Isabella's career and single-season totals bested former teammate Tajae Sharpe's career mark (3,486 from 2012-15) and Jimmy Moore's single-season record-setting year in 1998 of 1,494 yards on 92 catches.

Isabella's 102 receptions in 2018 and 231 career grabs rank as the second-most respectively. His 30 touchdown receptions and his 13 scoring catches in 2018 are also second-most and tied for the second-best in team history.
Ā
Ross Comis started at quarterback and was 23-of-31 for 278 yards passing, two touchdowns and one interception in his final collegiate game. Senior running back Marquis Young totaled 32 yards and a touchdown on seven carries and had three receptions for 13 yards in his final college game as well.
Ā
Seventh-year middle linebacker Bryton Barr led the defense with 10 tackles while junior cornerback Isaiah Rodgers added nine in the secondary. Barr's 10 tackles boosted his single-season total up to 147 on the year, tied for the sixth-most in one season in team history and the top mark of the FBS era.
Ā
Junior kicker Cooper Garcia was 2-of-2 on field goals from 32 and 34 yards, and 2-for-2 on extra point tries. Garcia finished the year 9-of-11 on field goals (81.1 percent) while he went a perfect 37-of-37 on extra points. Redshirt senior Theo Yongue connected on the final extra point attempt of the year.
Ā
Georgia scored the first two touchdowns of the game on runs by Tyler Simmons and Elijah Holyfield before Massachusetts responded with a rushing touchdown of its own.
Ā
After Bulldogs return man Terry Godwin muffed a punt return which UMass rookie Joseph Norwood recovered at the Georgia 16 yard line. Five plays later, Young bounced in from five yards away as UMass pulled within 14-7 with 1:52 remaining in the quarter.
Ā
Garcia converted both of his field goals in the second quarter as he put through his 34 yard attempt with 7:19 to go in the half before he capped the frame with a 32-yard make as time expired. However, the Georgia offense posted four more scores of its own in half and took a 42-13 lead into the break.
Ā
Isabella notched both of his touchdowns in the second half, one each in the third and fourth quarters, on big-gain plays.
Ā
The Mayfield, Ohio, native hauled in a 75-yard play as time expired in the third as he weaved his way to a touchdown. Officially, the play, and the entire scoring drive, took only one second as the series started with only a single tick left on the scoreboard.
Ā
Isabella added his second touchdown via a 45-yard catch as he carried a defender into the endzone with him at the 8:55 mark of the final frame.
Ā
Massachusetts ends its 2018 season with four wins, tied for the most in the program's FBS era alongside the 2017 campaign.
