The hockey and basketball standouts were honored for helping their respective squads to 2-0 records last week.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey sophomore goaltender Matt Murray and men's basketball junior guard Luwane Pipkins have been selected as the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week after guiding their respective teams to 2-0 records last week. The duo will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon tomorrow, Nov. 14, at Noon in the Berkshire Dining Commons. The event is open to all attendees and offers an $11.50 lunch prepared by the Princeton Review No. 1-rated college dining service in the nation.

Pipkins led the Minutemen to a pair of victories last week after averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds per-game. The Chicago, Illinois native scored 19 points with three assists and three rebounds in the season-opening win over UMass Lowell. He then added 14 points, seven assists, and four rebounds while shooting 4-of-5 from the field and going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in a win over New Hampshire.

Murray made a total of 58 saves over the pair of 3-2 victories over then-ranked No. 4/3 Providence for a .935 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average on the week, allowing just two even strength goals over the two-game set. He made 29 saves in Saturday's road matchup, which included stopping 15-of-15 shots in the third period, to help the Minutemen pick up their first win in Schneider arena since Jan. 30, 2010 and was named the No. 3 star of the night. Murray had 29 saves in Thursday's home victory over the Friars, as well.

Murray is the first goaltender in UMass' Division I history to start a season 6-0-0, and currently holds a Hockey East-leading .943 save percentage (No. 7 nationally) and a 1.67 goals-against average (No. 2 in Hockey East, No. 9 nationally) on the year.
