Third Quarter Puts USF Over Massachusetts Football

October 06, 2018 | Football

Isabella posts 13 receptions, 191 yards and one touchdown in 58-42 loss

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts football senior wide receiver Andy Isabella provided a career-high 13 receptions for 191 yards and one of the team's five passing touchdowns from three quarterbacks, but the Minutemen fell to the USF Bulls, 58-42, at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Saturday.

Andrew Ford started the game and went 19-of-27 for 199 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Ross Comis added a 12-of-23 showing for 172 yards and two touchdowns while Michael Curtis finished 2-for-2 with 30 yards and a score. Comis also rushed for 50 yards on 11 carries, including 14-yard score.

Isabella was the prime beneficiary of the UMass passing game to the tune of a career high in receptions, the second straight game he reset his personal best. Brennon Dingle and Samuel Emilus each finished with three receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown apiece. Bilal Ally and Travis Reynolds added touchdown receptions of 11 and seven yards, respectively.

Jarell Addo led the defense with 12 tackles, including 1.0 TFLs, and broke up one pass. Bryton Barr added nine stops, which included an eight-yard sack, and reeled in his first interception of the season.

Jordan Cronkrite guided USF with 302 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, a team and American Athletic Conference (AAC) record for yards in a game. Blake Barnett totaled 209 yards passing with a touchdown and interception during a 17-of-24 outing. Nick Roberts led the Bulls' defense with 10 tackles, including 1.0 TFLs.

After USF scored on the first play from scrimmage of the game, Massachusetts evened it at 7-all when Ford connected with Dingle on a 31-yard catch-and-run touchdown. Ford found Dingle over the middle, where the 5-foot-10 receiver shed a tackle and scooted into the endzone for his second touchdown of the season.

USF edged back in front on a field goal, but the Minutemen again answered as Barr turned an interception a short field for Ford. Blake Barnett dropped back to pass for USF on second and 10 from the UMass 44, where Barr stepped into Barnett's throwing lane and hustled back 53 yards to the USF 13. Ford connected with Emilus in the back of the endzone on the next play for a 14-10 lead with 13 minutes, 37 seconds left in the opening half.

USF pushed back in front as the seesaw battle continued with two consecutive scoring series near the end of the half. Weiss hit a 25-yard field goal before Johnny Ford rushed in from 19 yards away following a kick return fumble for the 20-14 advantage at the break.

The third quarter separated the Bulls from the Minutemen as USF posted three straight scoring series, which included runs of 30 and 77 yards by Jordan Cronkrite and a 12-yard Vincent Davis fumble recovery for a touchdown. Davis' return, the final of the three, put USF in front 41-14 with 7:37 to go in the third.

The sides traded scores the remainder of the way en route to the 58-42 final. It included Comis' 14-yard run, Isabella' 53-yard catch and Ally and Reynolds' first collegiate touchdown catches.

Massachusetts football returns to McGuirk Alumni Stadium following the bye week for a Sat., Oct. 20 tilt with Coastal Carolina. Kickoff for the Family Weekend and Hometown Heroes Game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
