Crawford, Tavares Named Spring Scholar-Athletes

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Athletics has named Kelsey Crawford and Paolo Tavares its 2017 Spring Scholar-Athletes, it was announced on Wednesday.
Crawford, a senior from Houston, Texas, was named UMass' Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship Nominee at the fourth annual SAMYS on Monday. A kinesiology major with a 3.421 GPA, she plans to pursue an accelerated Master's in computer science with a specialization in coding analysis for medical devices. She holds the school record for indoor shot put and the javelin. Crawford ranks third all-time in the weight throw, outdoor shot put and heptathlon.
An NCAA Championships qualifier in the javelin, she won the conference title in the heptathlon in 2013, is a three-time Atlantic 10 silver medalist (indoor shot put, outdoor shot put, javelin) and took home the 2017 A-10 bronze medal in the indoor shot put. Crawford is also a four-time New England Champion in the indoor and outdoor shot put and heptathlon.
Tavares, a senior from New Bedford, Massachusetts, was honored with the Faculty Athletics' Representative (FAR) Individual Award (highest GPA) at Monday's SAMYS. A biology major with a 3.899 GPA, he is a four-time academic all-conference selection and participated in the UMass Baccalaureate MD Pathway Program at UMass Medical Center during the summer of 2015.
Tavares holds two top-25 finishes and all-league honors at the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships (21st in 2016, 12th in 2015). He's also a two-time medalist in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the A-10 Outdoor Championships (silver in 2015, bronze in 2016).
