Hot-Shooting Duquesne Drops UMass Men’s Basketball

Pipkins leads Minutemen with 16 points, Jarreau scores 10

HIGHLIGHTS
The Minutemen were unable to offset the hot shooting of Duquesne, which hit 50.0 percent of their shots (18-of-36), including a 7-for-13 showing from beyond the 3-point arc (53.8 percent). The Dukes were also 8-of-11 at the foul line (72.7 percent) en route to a 51-34 halftime lead.
A 6-0 Duquesne run turned a 30-26 advantage for the Dukes into a comfortable margin at 36-26 with five minutes, five seconds still to go in the frame. Up 46-34, the home side pushed their advantage to 17 during the final seven seconds of the first half. Mike Lewis II drove to the right side of the hoop for a layup before he stole possession from the Minutemen and hit a one-handed, off-balance desperation heave as time expired on the half.
SECOND HALF
Duquesne continued to connect from all parts of the court as the Dukes built their lead as large as 40 points halfway through the frame. Jarreau reached double-digits in the scoring column with a traditional 3-point play with 16:30 to play in the game. His and-1 play cut it 61-42, but Duquesne responded with a 20-point scoring run to silence the comeback effort.

The Minutemen return to campus for a Sat., Feb. 18 contest against Davidson. The game will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network at Noon.

- Luwane Pipkins totaled a team-high 16 points with four made 3-pointers and a 4-for-4 finish at the foul line. It gives Pipkins 13 games in double-figures during the year.
- DeJon Jarreau scored double-figures with 10 points. It marked his 11th game scoring at least 10 on the season. Jarreau added four assists to reach 110 this year.
- Massachusetts shot 50.0 percent overall (12-of-24) and from beyond the 3-point line (4-of-8) in the first half. The Minutemen were also an efficient 6-of-7 at the foul line (85.7 percent). It is the second-such performance with at least a 50.0 field goal and 85.0 free throw percentage by UMass on the season (vs. Kennesaw State, 2nd half).
- With their seven made 3-pointers at Duquesne, Massachusetts added $355.39 to its pledged Coaches vs. Cancer 3-Point Challenge donations ($50.77 per made 3-pointer). The Minutemen entered the night ranking sixth in the country for total donations secured among the 209 participating teams.
