Grounding The Flyers
UMass men's basketball defeated preseason Atlantic 10 Conference favorite Dayton, 67-55 in the Mullins Center on Wed., Jan. 11. For the win, the Minutemen limited Dayton to its lowest scoring output of the season on the Flyers' lowest shooting percentage (.316; 18-of-57). Dayton also committed 19 turnovers in the game - another season high for the squad. The triumph evened the all-time series at 12 games won by each side while it improved the Minutemen to 9-4 all-time at home against Dayton.

Holloway Loves A-10 Play
Rashaan Holloway increased his productivity during the opening four games of Atlantic 10 play to the tune of 17.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per league contest. It makes him the only player in the Atlantic 10 to rank in the top five for points, rebounds and blocks through A-10 play on Thurs., Jan. 12.

Holloway also ranks third in the A-10 during conference-only games in field goal percentage (.659) and tied for eighth in offensive (2.8) and defensive (5.8) rebounds per game.

The 6-foot-11 center had double-doubles at George Mason (17 points, 10 rebounds) and VCU (22 points, 11 rebounds). Holloway surpassed double-figures in all four games, with 14 in the win over Dayton and 15 against St. Bonaventure.

Doubled Up On The Double-Doubles
After 44 career games without one, Rashaan Holloway recorded his first collegiate double-double on 17 points and 10 rebounds at George Mason on Wed., Jan. 4. He immediately followed with a 22-point, 11-rebound double-double at VCU on Sat., Jan. 7. Holloway's second double-double marked career highs in points, rebounds and blocks (4).

Combined, Holloway averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks during the two-game week in only 26.5 minutes played per game. He shot 16-of-25 overall (64.0 percent) and was 7-for-7 at the foul line. He split his boards between 10 on the offensive end and 11 on the defensive side.

He is the first UMass forward or center with a double-double since Antwan Space had 17 points and 17 rebounds in a 108-99 overtime win at Duquesne on Feb. 14, 2016.

The Rookies Get The Call
Three rookies started for the Minutemen in their game at George Mason: DeJon Jarreau (G), Luwane Pipkins (G) and Brison Gresham (F). It marks the first game UMass started three freshmen since the end of the 2009-10 season. Head coach Derek Kellogg last tabbed three freshmen as starters against Richmond in the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinal Round (Javorn Farrell, Freddie Riley and Terrell Vinson).

Pipkins has started all 17 games while Jarreau enters the Rhode Island contest with 14 starts in his 15 appearances. Gresham got the nod for the first time at George Mason after nine appearances off the bench.

Just Point To The Hoop And Say, Go Holloway Up
Rashaan Holloway ranks second in the Atlantic 10 with his 63.0 field goal percentage (75-of-119) through games on Thurs. Jan. 12. Holloway does not have enough makes per game (5.0) to qualify for the NCAA rankings. His percentage would place him tied for 12th overall in the nation with the prerequisite number of made baskets per game played. Holloway is shooting 65.7 percent in his last seven games (44-67; 6.3-9.6). He only has two games with less than a .500 field goal percentage on the entire season.

Luwane Strip-kins, Fast-Handed Minuteman
Freshman guard Luwane Pipkins has the eighth-most steals per game (2.65) across NCAA Division I men's basketball and also ranks eighth in total steals (45) through games on Thurs., Dec. 12. He is one of only two players in NCAA Division I with two games of seven or more steals this season (8 vs. UMass Lowell; 7 vs. UCF).

His eight against UMass Lowell also rank tied for the fifth-most in a single game in NCAA Division I this season and are tied for the most in the history of the UMass men's basketball program. His game with seven steals currently ranks 11th in the nation.

Led by Pipkins' 45, UMass owns the 14th-most steals per game (8.8) in the nation as of contests on Thurs., Jan. 12.

20-Pointers A Team-Wide Routine
Six members of the program have at least one outing with 20 or more points through the opening 12 games played. Those six Minutemen include Donte Clark (29 vs. Harvard; 22 vs. North Carolina A&T, 27 vs. Rider), Tyrn Flowers (20 vs. UCF), Rashaan Holloway (21 vs. UMass Lowell; 21 at Providence; 22 vs. VCU), DeJon Jarreau (25 at Ole Miss), Zach Lewis (20 at Ole Miss) and Luwane Pipkins (20 at Providence, 27 vs. Kennesaw State).

Massachusetts is one of only two teams in the country with six or more players who recorded at least one 20-point game in 2016-17, joined by Memphis.

Anderson Named A NABC Good Works Team Nominee
C.J. Anderson was selected as a nominee for the 2017 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Good Works Team, as announced by the NABC on Wed., Nov. 30. Anderson is one of 181 men's basketball student-athletes from the NCAA Divisions I, II, II and NAIA levels chosen as a nominee.

The Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams recognize players at all levels of college basketball whose charitable involvement and altruistic acts stand out amongst all other student-athletes participating in the sport. From leading an initiative to help end the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, to co-founding a non-profit with the mission to improve literacy rates across the country, the players nominated embody the true spirit of teamwork and giving back.
