Chatman Elevated to Associate Head Coach Role

AMHERST, Massachusetts – University of Massachusetts men's basketball head coach Derek Kellogg announced ninth-year staff member Shyrone Chatman's elevation to associate head coach on Thursday. Chatman's first season as associate head coach doubles as his sixth campaign on the coaching staff after he spent the previous five years as an assistant.

"I am excited to announce the promotion of Shyrone Chatman into the role of associate head coach on our University of Massachusetts men's basketball staff," Kellogg said. "Shyrone has been an integral part of this program's overall success during my tenure as head coach and continues to be one of the most dedicated coaches and recruiters in the business.

"He helped tremendously with the recruitment of our nationally ranked freshman class, the top-rated group joining the Atlantic 10 this year, and has been instrumental in our successes on the court, including the three national postseason berths in the last five seasons," Kellogg continued. "Shyrone is deeply committed to our UMass Basketball culture and to helping build a championship-caliber team. I look forward to having him coaching at my side with Adam Ginsburg and Andy Allison again this season."

Chatman brought his dedication to on-court improvement and relentless recruiting efforts to the UMass coaching staff with his promotion to assistant coach prior to the 2011-12 season. His on-court focus yielded immediate returns at the guard position while his recruiting efforts helped UMass net a nationally ranked and highly respected class for the 2016-17 season - the top-rated group in the Atlantic 10.

"First of all, I would like to thank God for blessing me with the abilities and gifts that have created every opportunity for me," Chatman said. "I am thankful Coach (John) Calipari convinced me that I have what it takes to be successful in coaching and, without him, none of this would be possible for me. Additionally, I would not be here without Coach (Derek) Kellogg, who gave me an opportunity I will forever be grateful for eight years ago - to come to the University of Massachusetts, join his staff and prove myself. I am blessed with a supportive family and with patient loved ones who bear with me in a profession that requires long hours and much absence from some of the most important relationships."

"I am grateful to all of the guys I have worked alongside, who have also played a part in my development as a coach and recruiter," Chatman continued. "Lastly, I would not be here now without all the players I have had the opportunity to recruit, develop and impact during my time at UMass. I look forward to the new, exciting and challenging responsibilities on the road ahead. I will give my blood, sweat and tears towards helping UMass Basketball reach its full potential."

Since moving to the role of assistant coach with recruiting and on-court responsibilities five seasons ago, UMass has produced 101 victories, posted three 20-win seasons and, in 2014, made the school's ninth all-time NCAA Tournament trip and first since the 1997-98 campaign. With Chatman's help, the Minutemen also made a pair of NIT appearances, including an NIT Final Four showing in 2012, and reached the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals on two occasions.

As an assistant coach, Chatman helped in the development of key UMass guards over the previous five seasons, including three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection Chaz Williams, USBWA All-District choice Trey Davis, 2016 Atlantic 10 Co-Sixth Man of the Year Jabarie Hinds and 2016-17 returning leading scorer Donte Clark.

Before his promotion to assistant coach, Chatman served as the director of player personnel in his first three seasons with the University of Massachusetts men's basketball program. He joined UMass after two seasons on-staff at his alma mater, the University of Memphis.
