HOW TO APPLY TO BECOME AN ATHLETICS SUBJECT TUTOR OR A STUDENT LEARNING ASSISTANT (SLA)Â
Before each semester the LEP staff posts a job listing on the UMass Student Job BoardÂ
- Please read the listing in its entirety and complete the application linkedÂ
- The LEP staff will review applications and reach out to those who will be offered an interviewÂ
- New staff members will attend orientation and trainings, as well as completing all necessary paperwork and forms before starting workÂ
- Please note: Due to the supply and demand nature of our program, Academic Services cannot guarantee a minimum number of hours to any tutor. Position open to those who have sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student status.
Athletics Subject Tutor Job DescriptionÂ
The role of the tutor is to assist student-athletes in becoming proficient in the specified academic course(s). This will be accomplished through a variety of means, which may include explanation, clarification, and organization of course content. Tutors may also use techniques such as quizzing, questioning, and repetition. Tutors will be assigned specific student-athletes and subjects and will meet individually on a weekly basis. Occasionally, a tutor may be asked to meet a student-athlete for a one-time appointment or may be set up with a small group of student-athletes. Tutors will work alongside academic staff to create an academic support plan for student-athletes. Â
Primary Responsibilities:Â
- Meet with students in subject specific tutoring sessionsÂ
- Tutor content/concept questions students may have Â
- Utilize approved student course materials in support sessionsÂ
- Adhere to all relevant NCAA Compliance Rules and RegulationsÂ
- Submit timely online reports for appointments in the EAB Campus SystemÂ
Other duties:Â
- Attend and participate in required meetings/trainings conducted by the SLA and Tutor CoordinatorsÂ
- Submit weekly payrolls through HR DirectÂ
Qualifications:Â Â
- You must be a UMass student with Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate statusÂ
- Must be available for in-person sessionsÂ
- Have received an A- in a course to tutor Â
- Must be responsible and professionalÂ
- Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skillsÂ
Athletics Student Learning Assistant (SLA) Job DescriptionÂ
Student Learning Assistants are undergraduate or graduate students who work closely with student-athletes in the Learning Enhancement Program. The Student Learning Assistant will work directly, in-person, with student-athletes in weekly sessions to provide academic support. This position provides support through academic skill building such as building time management, organization, note taking, reading comprehension, study strategies, and writing skills. Student Learning Assistants believe that all students can learn under favorable conditions, have knowledge of how to create growth mindsets, and have strong interpersonal skills. Student Learning Assistants are empathetic individuals who prioritize students' perspectives and can use diverse problem-solving techniques to meet student needsÂ
Primary Responsibilities:Â
- Structure and facilitate individual student learning sessionsÂ
- Be familiar with the course syllabus, course assignments and requirements of the classesÂ
- Conduct weekly learning support sessions with designated caseloads of at-risk students to help develop academic skills including time management, reading comprehension, study skills, writing, etc.Â
- Collaborate with Learning Specialists and/or Academic Counselors to create individualized learning plansÂ
- Adhere to all relevant NCAA Compliance Rules and RegulationsÂ
- Maintain weekly or daily communication with the SLA/Tutor CoordinatorÂ
- Submit timely online reports for appointments in the EAB Campus SystemÂ
