Leidel, Clark Named Student-Athletes of the Week

December 20, 2016 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball

AMHERST, Mass. University of Massachusetts Athletics has selected Hailey Leidel and Donte Clark as its Student-Athletes of the Week for Dec. 12-18.

Leidel, a freshman guard from Brownstown, Michigan, scored a game-high 21 points on Sunday in a come-from-behind win over Holy Cross to help lead the women's basketball team to a 1-1 week. The freshman suffered a badly bruised left eye on Monday to start the week which had only partially healed by Wednesday's game at Boston University. Despite having vision in just her right eye, she was still able to score nine points against the Terriers including a pair of three pointers. By Sunday, she was able to see well enough to hit 6-of-10 field goals including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc to help the Minutewomen overcome a 23-point first half deficit to beat the Crusaders. Of her 21 points, she scored 12 in the second half highlighted by three three pointers.

Clark, a junior guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, averaged 16.5 points, 6.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in the Gotham Classic wins over North Carolina A&T, 65-59, and Kennesaw State, 95-77. He shot 51.9 percent in the process (14-27), including 50.0 percent on 3-pointers (4-8), and split his assists evenly between the two games with six in each and reset his season-high in the category in the process.
