MASSACHUSETTS HIGHLIGHTS
Adam Breneman put the Minutemen on the board with a 14-yard touchdown reception on the first play of the second quarter. It was his third touchdown of the season and first since the win over FIU on Sat., Sept. 17.
Adam Breneman's first touchdown capped the longest UMass drive of the season by total yardage, as it started at the eight yard line and featured 14 plays and five first downs, including one earned on fourth-and-one.
Andrew Ford hit Adam Breneman for another touchdown reception in the fourth quarter, giving Breneman his first collegiate multi-touchdown performance including Breneman's three years as a member of the Penn State program.
Jalen William's 73-yard second quarter touchdown reception was the longest passing play and touchdown catch of the season.
Jalen Williams' touchdown reception was the longest for the Minutemen since Blake Frohnapfel connected with Alex Kenney on an 80-yard TD against Bowling Green on Sept. 27, 2014. The 73-yard scoring play also went as Williams' longest career catch and Andrew Ford's longest pass completion.
Marquis Young finished with 123 yards rushing over 28 carries, an average of 4.4 yards per carry against South Carolina. In his three games against SEC opposition, Young went for 307 yards on 65 carries with one touchdown (4.7 per carry).
Andrew Ford threw three touchdowns at South Carolina, his fifth time in as many games started with multiple touchdowns thrown. He also rushed for an eight-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, his first TD on the ground as a Minuteman.
Steve Casali and Da'Sean Downey each had a quarterback sack against South Carolina, giving the Minutemen 15 on the season. It ties the 2016 team for the most in one year during the FBS era as the 2014 and 2015 squads had 15 each over their 12-game slates.
Isaiah Rodgers forced a fumble and recovered the loose ball, his first career forced fumble and fumble recovery.
HOW IT HAPPENED
South Carolina scored on a pair of one yard runs during its opening two drives for a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Rico Dowdle had the first before David Williams plunged into the endzone for the second.
Massachusetts answered as it strung together its longest drive of the season, a 14-play, 92-yard scoring series capped by Adam Breneman's 14-yard touchdown reception.
The Gamecocks responded with a Jake Bentley-to-K.C. Crosby touchdown play for a 20-14 lead as the extra point snap was botched. South Carolina then added a second touchdown with a 24-yard grab by Bryan Edwards for a 27-7 advantage following its next possession.
After the first UMass scoring drive totaled six minutes, nine seconds, the second took only 13 seconds as Andrew Ford found Jalen Williams open over the middle for a 73-yard touchdown reception.
David Williams added his second one-yard scoring play of the day in the third quarter as South Carolina bumped its lead to 34-14 with seven minutes, 53 seconds to go in the frame.
After Isaiah Rodgers forced a fumble and recovered the loose ball, UMass produced its third scoring drive of the game. Ford closed the series with a diving play at the left pylon that resulted in an eight-yard touchdown.
The Minutemen added another scoring drive late in the fourth to pull within six of tying when Ford hit Breneman from 18 yards away on third-and-17 for Breneman's second touchdown of the game.
With the score 34-28, Massachusetts was unable to complete the comeback as South Carolina received the ball with 4:32 to go and held possession with a grind-out drive that ticked the clock to zero and secured the Gamecocks the win.
