AMHERST, Mass. - Richmond turned a two-point halftime lead into a 10-point edge and held off a late Massachusetts comeback try for a 56-53 win at the Mullins Center Wednesday night.

UMass (17-13, 10-7 Atlantic 10) lost for the fourth time in the last five games. The Minutemen are alone in sixth place in the league standings entering Saturday's regular-season final at George Washington. That game will begin at 3:30 p.m. and be televised on NBC SN.

Senior Cady Lalanne collected his 13th double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He made all six field goal shots while constantly facing double- and triple-teams from the Spiders. Freshman Donte Clark had 12 points and senior Maxie Esho became the 48th player in UMass history to reach 1,000 points, finishing with 10 and eight boards.

The Minutemen committed 17 turnovers as the Spiders scored 15 points off those miscues. UMass was only able to net four points off nine UR turnovers.

Richmond (18-12, 11-6) got 14 points from Kendall Anthony, which included a pair of buckets in the final two minutes that helped keep the Spiders in front.

UR won its fifth-consecutive game while making just 3-of-17 from outside - a .176 clip - for its second-worst game this season.

UMass led for the majority of the game's opening eight minutes, but UR went on a 7-0 run to claim a 18-13 lead and never trailed again.

UR led 26-21 with 5:00 in the half, before UMass climbed to within two thanks to a pair of Cady Lalanne layups that trimmed the Spider lead to 27-25 at 2:56. Neither team could capitalize the remainder of the half.

After trading baskets to open the second half, the Spiders scored seven-straight to grab their largest lead of the contest at 37-27 with 13:20 left.

UMass worked the UR margin down to four with solid free throw shooting from Lalanne and Esho before a Clark fast break layup made it a 41-37 game with 8:00 to play.

The closest the Minutemen were able to get was 48-46 with 1:40 left following a Clark 3-point play.

But the Spiders sprung back with a ShawDre' Jones layup and an Anthony fast break run out for a 52-46 lead with 45.5 left.
