December 21, 2015 | Men's Basketball
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - University of Massachusetts men's basketball senior guard Trey Davis earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday morning. Davis took home his first weekly laurel from the Atlantic 10 on the strength of a 40-point game against New Orleans, the second-most scored in a single contest in UMass men's basketball history.
Davis' one-game total was only one point shy of tying Billy Tindall for the most all-time (41 vs. Vermont; Feb. 10, 1968). His 40 points reset the Mullins Center record for most scored by one player in a game, a mark previously held by Marcus Camby (38 vs. Dayton; Jan. 6, 1996), who was in the building for the game as part of the celebration of and banner-raising for former head coach John Calipari.
Davis scored 17 points in each half of regulation before he added six points during the crucial overtime period, all of which came at the foul line. He shot 10-of-18 from the floor and hit 18 of his 20 free throws, including his final 18 of the game. His 18 makes also rank second all-time in program history for one game while his 20 foul shots attempted tied him for fourth in the category.
In a game when he also recorded six rebounds, four steals, three assists and a pair of blocks, the DeSoto, Texas, native's scoring prowess sealed the 103-95 overtime victory for the Minutemen. His performance currently ranks second in the NCAA Division I for free throws made in a single game this season and tied for sixth for most points scored in a single game.
Fordham's Joseph Chartouny and George Mason's DeAndre Abram share the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Award.
The Minutemen are back in action against nationally ranked Providence (11-1) on Monday, Dec. 21 with a 7 p.m. game. UMass Athletics hosts Maroon-Out The Mullins Center against the Friars and the first 2,000 fans through the doors will receive a free maroon UMass t-shirt courtesy of MAPFRE Insurance.
