UMass Drops Overtime Heartbreaker At BYU, 77-71

PROVO, Utah - The Massachusetts basketball team held a 3-point lead two-minutes into overtime but saw BYU score 10-straight and come away with a 77-71 win over the Minutemen at the Marriott Center Tuesday afternoon.
Trailing by one with 30 seconds remaining in regulation, UMass got a defensive stop and made a play to win the game, but Maxie Esho was fouled at the rim and made 1-of-2 free throws with 2.2 remaining to force the extra session.
In the overtime, UMass opened with a 3-pointer from Trey Davis and Esho followed a BYU free throw with a basket to put the Minutemen ahead 67-63 with 3:42 to play.
Two Anson Winder free throws with 1:54 left gave BYU its first lead of the overtime. They got a dunk from Corbin Kaufusi to extend the lead to 71-68 with a minute left.
Donte Clark had a great look at a three from the left wing with 25 seconds remaining but it was a bit long. BYU got the rebound and made two free throws to push the margin into a two-possession game that UMass was unable to cut into.
Esho led UMass with 16 points and nine rebounds before fouling out in overtime. Clark had 14 points, three assists and two steals off the bench. The freshman took over the game midway through the second half, scoring eight points in a 10-3 UMass run that put the Minutemen ahead 49-45 with 11 minutes on the clock.
Cady Lalanne recorded his seventh double-double of the year with 11 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Davis had 11 points - with three 3-pointers, three assists and three steals.
UMass (6-6) shot 46 percent from the floor as BYU employed a zone for the majority of the game. The Minutemen made five 3-pointers and were 12-of-17 at the foul line.
BYU (10-3) shot 39 percent and outrebounded UMass 40-36.
Winder led all players with 25 points and three 3-pointers. Kyle Collinsworth added 18 points and 15 boards. Tyler Haws came into the game averaging 23.8 points per game and was limited to just four points.
The game had 14 ties and saw 18 lead changes.
BYU led 32-30 at the half.
UMass will return home to play host to Iona (7-4) on Tuesday, Dec. 30. Tip-off at the Mullins Center is set for 7 p.m. in the Minutemen's final non-conference game year.
