Luwane Pipkins Signs National Letter Of Intent With UMass
November 19, 2014 | Men's Basketball
AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts men's basketball team has announced that Luwane Pipkins has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Minutemen beginning next fall.
Pipkins is a 5-foot-10, 165 pound guard in his senior season at Bogan Prep in Chicago.
"I'm excited for him to join the program," UMass Head Coach Derek Kellogg said. "He is a person with high character who is committed to UMass academically and athletically.
"He fits the mold of the type of player we have recruited here and brings intangibles I like to coach. He's got toughness for a guard who can play multiple positions and score from the point guard spot."
Pipkins led Bogan to the Class 3A Vocational Sectional before falling to two-time defending state champion Morgan Park in a supersectional last season. Bogan collected wins against Morgan Park and Simeon during the regular season to claim a Public League Red South title.
He averaged 27 points, five steals and four assists as a junior, while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range and 90 percent from the free-throw line. He was named to the Chicago Tribune's All-State special mention team.
"He is very well coached and his high school team plays a similar style to how we play," Kellogg added.
Pipkins also averaged 14.6 points, 3.1 assists and 1.9 steals for the Mac Irvin Fire.
