UMass Drops Overtime Heartbreaker To New Hampshire, 3-2

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts field hockey program played its first overtime game of the season against New Hampshire on Friday evening, falling to the Wildcats, 3-2 at Garber Field. The Minutewomen recorded a goal each from Lauren Allymohamed and Nicole Miller while Charlotte Verelst added an assist.
New Hampshire (4-4 overall) secured the win 10 minutes, 15 seconds into the extra period on an own goal by UMass. Megan Bozek sent a pass into the circle intended for teammate Emma Compagna. The ball rolled by Compagna and a marking defender untouched and deflected off of Minutewomen goalkeeper Sam Carlino before settling into the back of the cage.
UMass (7-3) went ahead, 1-0 in the 40th minute of competition following a penalty corner, as Allymohamed redirected a Verelst shot by New Hampshire goalkeeper Carlie Tarbell at the 39:57 mark.
The Minutewomen padded their advantage at 57:23 with Miller's second goal of the year. The freshman from Washington, N.J., controlled possession at the right-center edge of the circle and took the play to the endline before cutting toward the goal. Miller fired an attempt into the left side of the cage as Tarbell stepped forward to challenge the play.
However, the Wildcats battled back with a pair of goals during the final five minutes of regulation to even the score at 2-2 and force overtime. Meg Flately notched the first New Hampshire tally at 66:11 following a pass from Kellie Joyce. Melyssa Woods added the tying goal after a penalty corner. Woods corralled a loose ball in the circle and placed a shot by Carlino into the left side of the netting with 47 seconds to play.
Carlino finished with four saves on the day while Tarbell earned eight for the Wildcats. The Minutewomen led in total shots, 16-10 and on-target attempts, 10-8. UMass also earned an 8-5 edge on penalty corners.
The Minutewomen wrap up their three-game homestand with a contest against No. 2 Maryland (8-0) on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. Admission is free of charge to all.
