SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The No. 7 nationally ranked University of Massachusetts field hockey team secured a 1-0 victory over Ohio State to conclude play at the Syracuse Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Brooke Sabia recorded her team-leading eighth goal of the year to create the difference in the contest played at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
The Minutewomen (6-1 overall) struck for the only tally of the game with 43 minutes, 54 seconds gone by in the contest. On the second penalty corner chance of the day for the squad, Charlotte Verelst inserted the ball to Alexa Sikalis at the top of the circle. Sikalis pushed the play to Sabia, who fired a shot into the right side.
Sam Carlino, who finished with four saves in the cage, neutralized a pair of high quality Ohio State (2-3) chances over the remainder of play to record her sixth career shutout and third of the season.
A long pass toward the top of the UMass circle reached Buckeye Nora Murer, who was unmarked. Carlino pushed out to meet Murer at the top of the circle and stayed in front of the shot taken at the 61:29 mark to keep play scoreless.
On an ensuing penalty corner, Carlino dropped to the ground for a save at the goalmouth on a blast by Mona Frommhold with 7:49 to play in the contest. The defense, led by starters Lauren Allymohamed, Hannah Farrell, Hannah Prince and Mariajose Rodriguez, cleared the ball away and kept the Buckeyes from further opportunities.
Massachusetts led in shots, 10-8 and on-target attempts, 6-4. Penalty corners favored UMass, 6-5. Sarah Lemieux finished with five saves for the Buckeyes.
The Minutewomen head to No. 4 UConn (4-0) for their next contest, facing the Huskies on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m.
