MONCHENGLADBACH, Germany - Charlotte Verelst and Belgium's U-21 Field Hockey National Team defeated Ghana on penalty strokes, 4-3 after playing to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at the 2013 Junior World Cup. Verelst, who will enter the fall as a freshman on the University of Massachusetts squad, saw action as a reserve for Belgium, joining the action in the 11th minute.

Both regulation goals came during the first half as Belgium struck in the 27th minute before Ghana answered just before the break. With the score tied at the end of competition, the game came down to penalty strokes, with Belgium hitting four of six attempts against only three conversions for Ghana. Each squad knocked in three of its first five attempts to force sudden victory, where Belgium netted its first attempt while Ghana missed.

Verelst and Team Belgium will conclude play at the Junior World Cup with a game against Canada in the 13-14 place contest.

The Braine l'Alleud, Belgium, native will join the Minutewomen for the preseason as UMass prepares for the 2013 campaign. The Minutewomen start the year with a pair of contests at the University of Maine Invitational on Aug. 30-31 before facing UMass-Lowell in the home-opener on Sept. 3 at 6 p.m.
