AMHERST, Mass. - In a physical, defense-oriented contest that featured seven cards issued, No. 21 Albany used a penalty shot awarded by the officials with 26 seconds remaining to down UMass field hockey, 3-2 at Garber Field on Sunday afternoon. Junior forward Lindsay Bowman and senior forward Nicole Cordero each notched a goal for the Minutewomen.

Corrine McConville put the Great Danes ahead with less than a minute remaining in the contest after taking possession of the ball in the Minutewomen's defensive zone and forcing a one-on-one attempt with Sam Carlino, the UMass goalkeeper. Carlino charged toward McConville and slid at the ball in an attempt to deflect it away from McConville, but was whistled for a foul in the process, which resulted in the penalty shot attempt.

Bowman broke the scoreless tie during the 17th minute of play to give UMass a one-goal advantage early. Junior midfielder Alexa Sikalis dribbled toward the cage from outside the left side of the circle and slotted a pass through traffic to Bowman. The Palmyra, Pa., native redirected the ball into the right side for her first goal of the season.

UMass (4-6 overall) doubled its lead less than five minutes later, with Cordero finding the back of the cage for the fifth time on the season. At the 21:02 mark, freshman midfielder Brooke Sabia sent a pass into the circle to Cordero on the left side of the cage, with the forward from Oak Park, Ill., tapping a shot around the left post to double the advantage.

McConville notched a pair of penalty corner tallies in the 23rd and 64th minutes to even score at 2-2. Laura Page and Jessica Longstreth were each credited with assists on both plays.

Due to the defensive nature of the contest, shots were selectively taken on both sides, with UMass earning a 9-8 advantage. Attempts on goal also favored UMass, 8-7 while Albany earned more penalty corners, 6-5. Carlino stopped two Great Danes shots while senior midfielder Kate Heineman and junior defender Hannah Prince each earned one defensive stop. Kristi Troch blocked four UMass attempts for Albany.

The Minutewomen return to action against the University of Maine (6-4) with a Sun., Sept. 30 contest at 3 p.m. on Garber Field.
