UMass Falls To #19 JMU, 34-17, In FCS Finale

AMHERST, Mass. - Dae'Quan Smith rushed for a career-high 251 yards as No. 19 James Madison ground out a 34-17 win over UMass in the final FCS football game in McGuirk Stadium. Perry McIntyre and Darren Thellen led the Minutemen setting career highs in tackles with 17 and 14, respectively. The loss ends UMass' 2011 season with a 5-6 record overall.

Smith's performance on the ground was the second most for a single game in James Madison school history. The last time the Minutemen gave up a 200+ individual rushing performance was also against JMU in 2008.

Kellen Pagel was 20-of-36 for 236 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, while Jonathan Hernandez rushed for 50 yards on 20 carries. Julian Talley pulled down six catches for 57 yards.

JMU (7-4, 5-3 CAA) got on the scoreboard early with a one-yard rush from Jordan Anderson. On the ensuing UMass possession, Mike Allen picked off a Pagel pass and returned it 44 yards for the score, putting the Dukes up 14-0 with 8:46 remaining in the first.

UMass (5-6) was able to get on the board as Ryan Carter picked up a JMU fumble after a punt his a Dukes returner on the heel. The Minutemen were able to convert on a 20 yard field goal by Brandon Yelovich.

JMU was able to stretch their lead when they converted on a 25 yard field goal by Cameron Stark, and then Scott's first of two rushing touchdowns giving the Dukes a 24-3 advantage going into half.

The Minutemen got on the board first coming out of the half, as Alan Williams scored his first career rushing touchdown. He finished the day with six rushes for 20 yards.

Following the kickoff, Scott took the ball 76 yards from the line-of-scrimmage all the way to the endzone putting JMU up, 31-10.

JMU went on to score the game's final points on a field goal following a nine-yard touchdown pass from Pagel to Rob Blanchflower.

The Minutemen closed out their 46th year at McGuirk Stadium with a record of 172-79-2. They will now call Gillette Stadium their home as they enter the 2012 season as a member of the FBS Mid-American Conference.
