Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. - A quick 21-point first quarter followed by a blitzing defense which caused four interceptions gave the UMass football team a 28-7 win at Richmond on Saturday at Robins Stadium. Jonathan Hernandez had 103 rushing yards with three touchdowns, while Jesse Julmiste posted his first career 100-yard receiving game.

UMass will face Villanova next Saturday at McGuirk Stadium at 3:30 PM as part of a festive Homecoming Saturday.

UMass (5-3) caused a season-high six turnovers and sacked Richmond quarterbacks a season-high six times. The defense held the Spiders to just one yard rushing and just 299 yards of total offense.

Hernandez posted his 10th career 100-yard rushing game as the UMass offense pounded out 146 yards on the ground and 192 yards in the air. Alan Williams returned to the offensive lineup with 47 yards on 12 carries.

Jesse Julmiste hauled in a career-high seven catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. Kellen Pagel finished the game going 14-of-25 for 192 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, Perry McIntyre led the way with 11 tackles including 3.5 for a loss and one sack. Tim Brandt had a career-day with nine tackles and three sacks. Kirk Nelms, Tyler Holmes, Darren Thellen and Ryan Carter each had interceptions.

After receiving the opening kickoff, UMass took the ball 64 yards in just under three minutes to open the scoring with a two-yard Hernandez plunge.

Each team exchanged possessions after that before Pagel found Jesse Julmiste for a 37-yard touchdown score. Julmiste made the catch as a Richmond defender went for the interception and missed. The speedy senior wheeled around and streaked into the endzone untouched with 6:09 remaining in the first quarter.

Carter's interception with 2:29 left in the first quarter set-up a three-play, 18-yard scoring drive for the Minutemen capped by a one-yard Hernandez rush.

The Spiders (3-5, 0-5 CAA) scored the only points of the second quarter when Tre Gray scored on a six-yard pass from Corp to finish up a 13-play, 80-yard drive.

With 10:13 left in the third quarter, Hernandez scampered 14 yards to cap a two-play scoring drive and finish the game scoring. The touchdown tied his career-high for rushing touchdowns in a game.
