Kelly & Potts Lead UMass Over Vermont, 2-0

AMHERST, Mass. - Seniors Katie Kelly and Makaela Potts each recorded a goal to lead UMass field hockey (4-5) to a 2-0 victory over Vermont (4-5) under the lights at Garber Field on Friday night. The Minutewomen dominated throughout the contest, outshooting the Catamounts, 29-4, and drawing 13 penalty corners to Vermont's three.
The 29 shots were a season-high for the Minutewomen with Kelly and Potts leading the way with eight and seven, respectively.
Vermont goalie Brooke Crane was under pressure the whole game, but performed well, logging 12 saves.
Alesha Widdall recorded two saves to earn the shutout, her second of the season and 15th of the junior's career.
In the first half, UMass drew eight penalty corners before Kelly notched the game's first goal, a blast from inside the top of the circle with 2:50 left in the half. Christine Cutry assisted on the play, her second of the year. The goal was Kelly's sixth of the year and 31st of her career.
Potts made it a 2-0 game in the 47th minute on a hit from the top right of the circle off a penalty corner that beat Crane far side. Nikki Panciocco tallied her second assist of the season on the play. The goal was Potts' first of the year and 15th of the senior's career.
The Minutewomen remain home to host No. 19 Albany on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Garber Field.
