Five UMass Athletes Receive Alumni Association Awards

AMHERST, Mass. - Five UMass Minutewomen have been named Alumni Association scholarship and award recipients for 2009. Skier Emily Shilletto and distance runner Shiyi Zan were named William F. Field Alumni Scholars. Singles tennis player Laura Danai, rower Erin Kelley, and field hockey middy Erin Parker earned the Senior Leadership Award.
Shilletto, a sport management major, was named a second team All-American after finishing 12th in the Slalom (1:28.17) at the USCSA National Championships.
Zan, a kinesiology major, ranked first on the team all season during cross country. A Academic All-Conference honoree during the winter, Zan earned Student-Athlete of the Year during the fall.
Danai, the most valuable player on the team last season, is 12-6 this year at singles and 16-8 in doubles. She is a biology major.
Kelly, an anthropology major, rows with the varsity 8 boat this season. Last weekend, the Minutewomen reclaimed the Yankee Cup by edging Rhode Island by one point.
Parker, a marketing major, led the Minutewomen to back-to-back Atlantic 10 Championships as a junior and senior. This season, Parker was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team, the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team, and finished with five goals and eight assists with 27 shots and three game-winners, two of which came in overtime.
