Men's Skiing Places Six, Women Fifth, At ECSC Regionals

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - The UMass Ski team competed in the ECSC Regionals this past weekend in Waterville Valley, N.H. The women's team finished fifth overall, securing a spot in the USCSA Nationals in Winter Park, Colo. from March 3-7. The Men's team finished sixth overall after a disappointing ninth place finish in the Slalom before a second place finish in Sunday's Giant Slalom. UMass Skiing will be back in action this weekend when they will participate in the EISA Regionals at Sugarloff.
The Women's team placed three skiers in the top-15 during both days of the Regionals, led by Abby Nolan's (Duxbury, Mass.) fifth place finish in the Giant Slalom with a time of 2:19.76. Emily Shilletto (Toronto, Ont.) had a successful weekend on the slopes, finishing tenth in the Giant Slalom (2:21.14) after a ninth place finish in Saturday's Slalom event (1:44.40). Heidi Skinner (Westeron, Vt.) rounded out the Women's top three skiers on Sunday with a 12th place finish (2:21.86). Skinner also skied to a 15th place finish in the Slalom with a time of 1:46.11. Jamie Taloumis (Chicopee, Mass.) finished 20th in the Slalom (1:47.78) before a 17th place finish in Sunday's Giant Slalom (2:23.43).
In Saturday's Slalom, three of their five men's skiers were either disqualified or did not finish their runs. The men were forced to use a ghost time on Saturday, the worst run of the day plus ten percent. Alex Zahoruiko (North Andover, Mass.) finished seventh during both days with a time of 1:32.33 in the Slalom and a time of 2:13.60 in the Giant Slalom. Travis Hopkins (North Andover, Mass.) placed 17th (1:35.69) on Saturday before a fifth place finish on Sunday (2:13.26). Matthew Small (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) skied to a ninth place finish with a time of 2:15.24 on Sunday while Adam Pogorzelski (Freehold, N.J.) placed 30th (2:22.05).
